Walking Canes: a Gothic Tradition

In The Wolfman, the 1941 black and white film, the tragic protagonist is undone when he gives his friend a silver-headed walking cane. In the final scene, the Wolfman is brought down by this cane, and the cruel reality of the situation is shown to the surviving characters.

In the new edition of The Wolfman that released in 2010, there are movie posters that show another wolf-headed, silver cane.

Many of the great, classic horror movies are showcases for elegant and sophisticated walking canes. Bram Stroker’s Gothic tragedy Dracula has been reproduced in film several times, and the gentlemen that walk throughout the various films are often depicted with their walking canes.

The history of canes and walking sticks is extremely long and rich. Since humans began walking upright, canes and walking sticks have grown from being only a useful aid to a fashionable part of any man or woman's wardrobe.

Walking canes have appeared in the earliest parts of human history. In ancient Egypt, many of the gods are often depicted with walking canes or walking sticks, most namely Atum, creator of the gods and Amun-Ra, the king of all of the Egyptian deities. The Pharaohs themselves were often depicted with a shepherds crook, a symbol of their rule.

Later, in ancient Greece, the gods are often shown with walking sticks and canes. Why, exactly, the walking stick developed as a common symbol in ancient mythology is up to speculation, but a reasonable assumption would be because of their common use in the world.
As early as humans have been domesticating animals as a food source, shepherds quickly learned the usefulness of having a walking stick handy, as it often came in handy in herding their animals, combating thieves and wild predators. The common shepherd's crook-style handle is still a popular choice in handles today, although the technical name has changed to a Tourist cane.

The cane became a symbol of power and authority early and often, as evidenced in ancient Indian, Egyptian, Greek and Roman myth and literature. Even in the Catholic Church the Crook became a powerful symbol, representing the Bishop's office.

Measuring a walking cane

Here are few tips for measuring your own walking cane in case you do not have a physical therapist. However it is always best to see a healthcare professional to get a cane properly measured.

For most people the height of their cane is around half their height. But the following method for finding the ideal height of a walking cane is better than that rough guesstimate.

Take away the rubberized tip from the walking cane. Remember not to twist the handle. To remove the tight rubber tip, use a solution of a liquid soap and warm water. Spray the solution between the tip and the shaft. Do not pull the tip but slowly twist it.

The proper height for a person's walking cane can be determined correctly by two people. The person who is going to use the walking cane should wear his/her walking shoes and should stand as upright as they can. Their posture should be normal and the hand that will normally hold the walking cane should hang down to the side, bending the elbow as usual. They should kook straight ahead, and not look down.

The cane then can be placed on the ground, by holding the handle, at the side where they will normally wear the walking cane. Note that walking canes are usually held on the side opposite of the weakness or injury. If a person is going to be using the cane for balance it can be worn on either side of the body. Measure the distance from the ground to the bottom crease of your wrist (where you normally bend your wrist inwards). That is where your cane should fall, no shorter no less. At this length, you will gain the greatest amount of control over maintaining your weight on the walking cane. This length offers the best security.

After finding the ideal height, the cane should be cut at right angles with a fine and sharp saw blade. Always recall that you can make the cane shorter, but NEVER longer! You should be careful when cutting a cane so you don’t have to go out and buy another one due to a miscalculation.

Consider adding an accessory to your cane, such as a wrist strip, ice-grip or other accessory as per your need, convenience and safety.

How to use a walking cane

To start using a cane, you cannot just hold the cane in your hand and start walking with it. There are some points which must be in the mind while walking with a cane so as to get the best utilization of the cane.

Most people use their walking cane on the opposite side of their injury or weakness, regardless of which hand you write with. To take a step with your walking cane, place all your weight on your unaffected leg, then step with the cane and your affected leg at the same time. Only step a comfortable distance forward, because if you place your cane too far ahead of you it could slip and you could fall. With your weight supported on both your cane and your affected leg, step through with your unaffected leg. Avoid using revolving doors and escalators.

To go up stairs using a cane, take the first step up using your stronger leg. Then move the cane and your affected leg to that same step. Reverse this to go down stairs. Take the first step down with the cane and the "bad" leg. Then, lower your stronger leg to that step.

If you are using a cane to improve your balance when walking, place and plant your cane firmly on the ground before you take a step. Then repeat as you walk. Review and Preview of Walking Canes

This post is a review of the walking canes articles posted last week. In the coming week we will be posting more article about canes of all types, including some new canes that have just been added to the FashionableCanes.com inventory. Stay tuned!

On Tuesday May 23rd an article was posted to the blog about Valparaiso University's Cane Walk, an annual tradition at Valparaiso that dates back to 1902. Graduating law students walk from Wesemann Hall to the town square of Valparaiso where the county courthouse used to reside. FashionableCanes.com was happy to be able to supply the school with the canes for this wonderful and unique tradition.

On Wednesday May 24th an overview of walking canes and walking sticks was posted. It detailed what the parts of a cane are, what they are made of, and some of the important characteristics of walking canes and sticks. The most important one's are that the cane should be comfortable to grip, and the grip at the bottom of the cane should provide a stable base to aid in walking.

The next day we continued the overview of canes and walking sticks. We mentioned the difference between a walking stick and a walking cane is that walking sticks are used more by hikers to provide stability on rough terrain, often making use of the ferrule, which is the metal tip on a walking stick. There are many reasons someone might want a cane, be it for mobility assistance, for collecting, for protection, and so on.

The next article posted was the first in a two part article about the history of walking canes. In this introduction the cane's history from ancient times to around the 16th century was discussed. The walking cane's history is as long as humans. It was used by shepherds and travellers in ancient times, and progressed to sceptors and staffs of emperors and church officials in the Middle Ages. The type of cane a gentleman wore would signify his place in society.

The 27th of May we concluded our discussion on the blog about the history of walking canes. Since the last article discussed the history of walking sticks and canes in ancient times to the 16th century we started from there and progressed to the 18th century and modern times. In the 17th century, canes got shorter and people wore a lot of ribbons on them. Dandies wore longer canes with tons of ribbons. The cane started to replace the sword as the necessary fashion accessory for men. After the cane came the umbrella as the most common fashion accessory and canes were reduced to accessories for special occassions, like commencements, weddings, proms, and homecomings. As always, canes remain the most popular aid for mobility, but they are not a required fashion accessory these days.

Continuing the interesting study of the history of walking canes, we find ourselves in the late 17th century.

In these times it was very common that ribbons were used on the handles of walking canes. Also the height of every day walking canes had been reduced to around 3 feet. Before this time, walking canes and walking sticks were much taller. Think of a shepherd’s staff or the scepter’s used in Catholic ceremonies. The only people who were still using longer canes were dandies, whose canes were decorated with a great number of ribbons. (This came from the dandy’s philosophy and love for style and opulence. Before the middle of the 18th century, the sword was a necessary fashion accessory. It could be used to defend the wearer, and it was a required piece of the outfit a gentleman was wearing. However, as time wore on and guns became the weapon of choice for those needing to defend themselves, swords became less important, and in the mid-18th century, they started to be replaced with walking canes as the fashion accessory every man must wear. The change was gradual, but eventually walking sticks replaced swords as a sign of refinement and style.

The transition took some time, but by the end of the 19th century walking sticks had totally replaced the sword, becoming the necessary fashion accessory a man wouldn’t leave the house without. But more change was just around the corner.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the use of umbrellas steadily pushed the walking stick out of fashion. Early 20th century fashion dictated that walking sticks were only used for very formal events. Even today, canes are used for formal events by people young and old. Proms, homecomings, commencements, weddings, and other formal events are where one might see canes being worn as a fashion statement.

Canes for the blind were not used extensively until the 20th century. The white cane became the symbol for the blind after a great many years. James Biggs lost his sight and painted his cane white to make himself visible to motorists in 1921. It was not until the mid 20th century that the white cane had been cemented as the symbol of the blind and October 15th declared White Cane Safety Day by Lyndon B. Johnson.

From the late 17th century to all the way up to the early 20th century wearing a cane was a fashion requirement for a man. A cane made of excellent materials, silver or gold handles for example, would inform a passerby about the man’s station in life, his wealth, occupation even, and societal value. Wood was the most commonly used material for the construction of walking cane shafts, but some canes were made using leather, animals' spines or even glass so as to make their canes shaft more attractive and attention-getting. Walking canes played a vital role in times gone by, including:

Supporting the wearer while he was walking
A symbol of power
A mode of fashion
Maintain animals in a good order
A weapon of both self-defense and aggression.

The history of walking canes and walking sticks is as long and eventful as the history of humans. In ancient times, the main role walking sticks played was in shepherding animals, and assisting pilgrims and travelers on journeys. Then, a good walking stick helped the user to walk correctly when traveling long distances, helped to defend them against thieves and in shepherding, to ensure that the animals they were guarding were all together.

Over time, walking canes became more than functional aids for movement; they became a symbol of supremacy and strength. In the Middle Ages, walking sticks transformed into the scepters and staffs of kings and emperors. The king’s scepter, when carried in the right hand symbolized royal power, whereas a staff held in the left hand represented justice. In churches, higher officials also started using staffs, which symbolized their higher status in society. It wasn’t until the 16th century when different woods like bamboo and other woods were used as shaft that the use of the word ‘cane’ became commonplace. Before that, walking stick was the commonly used term.

In the 16th century, sticks and canes were both used for common purposes. However sticks and canes both signified something different. And this difference can be distingue on the basis of the raw material used in the manufacturing. Woods like ivory, whalebone, ebony ere use in the construction of sticks, where as canes were prepared by the use of bamboo, Malacca and other strong reeds. In those days one person’s prosperity and social position can be easily known by the walking canes used by him. After the 1600s, canes became a symbol of fashion. The use of cane was considered as a privilege.

So from ancient times to the 16th century, walking canes went from the realm of shepherd and other functional uses in ancient times, to the realm of king, emperor and pope in the Middle Ages, to a socially stratified division of uses in the 16th century. Valparaiso Law School Cane Walk

From time to time I'll be posting some of the letters we get from happy people who have bought our canes and have taken the time to let us know they like the product they received and enjoy the freedom and independence it allows them or their loved ones.

We had the pleasure of supplying the Law school at Valparaiso University with canes for their annual Cane Walk. The cane walk is a Valparasio University tradition, stretching back to as far as 1902. In the traditional walk, graduating law students carry walking canes from Wesemann Hall to the town square of Valparaiso, about 10 blocks away. The walk concludes at The Court restaurant, where the county courthouse used to reside and where the first Cane Walk ended. Walking Canes Review

It has been quite some time since a review post was made, so this post will go back to the middle of March and review posts made since then.

On March 14th the first of a series of posts about quad canes was posted. Quad canes provide added stability for those who may suffer from muscle weakness due to stroke or illness.

The next article posted the 20th of March was about heavy duty quad canes for heavier users. Heavy duty quad canes can support weights up to 500 lbs. are good for people who want more stability and assurance when walking, maybe after knee, foot, or hip surgery.

March 21st began a series of articles on adjustable folding canes. Folding canes are perfect for traveling because after use they fold up and can be put in a purse, bag or suitcase. They are much easier to use when on the go than a normal straight cane.
